Lithium-Ion Battery, EV and Energy Storage Safety Training

CESAT provides specialized lithium-ion battery safety training, electric vehicle and EV fire-response training, and battery energy storage system safety courses across Canada. Available virtually and in person, our courses help firefighters, first responders, municipalities, towing and recovery operators, facility managers and industry professionals recognize battery hazards, prepare for incidents and make safer operational decisions. Battery 101

Battery 101 provides a practical introduction to battery technology, with a focus on lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, micromobility devices, consumer products and battery energy storage systems. Participants examine battery chemistry, construction and operation while learning how damage, defects, improper charging and other conditions can contribute to overheating, thermal runaway and fire.

Virtual Course – Two Hours

The two-hour virtual course establishes foundational knowledge for recognizing battery hazards, identifying warning signs and making safer operational decisions around battery-powered products and systems.

In-Person Course – Four Hours

The four-hour in-person course includes controlled demonstrations of battery failure conducted by qualified instructors under established safety protocols. Participants can observe battery failure, thermal runaway and the resulting fire and pressure-related hazards in a controlled training environment.

International Training

CESAT’s instructor-led virtual training is available to organizations and participants internationally. Our training team is also available to deliver customized international programs, including Train-the-Trainer courses and intensive multi-day or full-week workshops. Programs can be adapted to local technologies, operational responsibilities, emergency-response practices and training requirements.

International in-person training is quoted separately based on the program, location, number of participants and travel requirements.

Topics include: battery cells, modules and packs; common battery chemistries; charging and discharging; battery damage and failure indicators; thermal runaway; fire behaviour; and fundamental handling and safety considerations.

Delivery: Two-hour instructor-led virtual course or four-hour in-person course with controlled battery-failure demonstrations.

Fire Safety & First Responder Training

Fire Safety and First Responder Training examines the hazards and operational challenges associated with lithium-ion battery fires involving electric vehicles, micromobility devices and battery energy storage systems. Participants learn how battery incidents can differ from conventional fires and why an effective response must extend beyond initial extinguishment.

Virtual Course – Two Hours

The two-hour virtual course introduces lithium-ion battery fire behaviour and fundamental response considerations. Participants learn to recognize thermal runaway, assess electrical and explosion hazards, establish scene controls and anticipate re-ignition and post-incident risks.

In-Person Course – Four Hours

The four-hour in-person course applies these principles through instructor-led exercises and controlled live scenarios. Participants examine incident assessment, responder positioning, cooling and containment considerations, thermal monitoring, scene coordination and post-extinguishment planning.

International Training

CESAT’s instructor-led virtual training is available to organizations and first responders internationally. Our training team can also deliver customized international programs, including Train-the-Trainer courses and intensive multi-day or full-week workshops.

Programs can be adapted to local emergency-response practices, available equipment, battery technologies, energy storage installations and the responsibilities of fire, police, EMS, towing and recovery personnel.

Energy Storage Fundamentals

Energy Storage Fundamentals introduces battery energy storage systems and the safety considerations associated with their installation and operation. Participants learn how these systems store and distribute energy, how their components work together and how large-scale battery installations can create distinct electrical, thermal, fire and explosion hazards.

Virtual Course – Two Hours

The two-hour virtual course provides an overview of battery energy storage system design, common applications and fundamental safety considerations. Participants examine system components, monitoring and protection features, thermal runaway, propagation, ventilation and emergency-planning requirements.

In-Person Course – Four Hours

The four-hour in-person course connects energy storage fundamentals to practical applications and real-world operating environments. Participants examine equipment configurations, warning systems, access and isolation considerations, responder staging, emergency procedures and post-incident monitoring.

Where appropriate, the program can incorporate site-specific examples or a review of the host organization’s battery energy storage system and emergency-response plan.

International Training

CESAT’s instructor-led virtual energy storage system training is available to organizations and participants internationally. Our training team can also deliver customized international programs, including Train-the-Trainer courses and intensive multi-day or full-week workshops.

Battery Management Systems

Battery Management Systems training examines how a Battery Management System—or BMS—monitors, manages and protects lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles, equipment and battery energy storage systems. Participants learn what a BMS is designed to do, how it identifies abnormal conditions and why battery failure can still occur despite electronic monitoring and protective safeguards.

Virtual Course – Two Hours

The two-hour virtual course introduces BMS architecture, components and core functions. Participants examine how a BMS monitors voltage, temperature and current; estimates battery condition; manages charging and discharging; and responds when operating limits are exceeded.

In-Person Course – Four Hours

The four-hour in-person course provides a more advanced examination of BMS operation, fault information and troubleshooting. Through instructor-led demonstrations and applied examples, participants explore warning signals, diagnostic information, system limitations and potential failure modes.

Where appropriate, the program can be adapted to the battery systems, vehicles or equipment used by the participating organization.

International Training

Battery Standards and Applications

Battery Standards and Applications provides an overview of the standards, testing requirements and regulatory frameworks governing lithium-ion batteries, electric vehicles and battery energy storage systems. Participants learn how standards support battery safety, what certification marks demonstrate and why laboratory compliance does not eliminate every risk encountered during transportation, installation, operation or emergency response.

Virtual Course – Two Hours

The two-hour virtual course reviews key Canadian and international battery safety standards and their practical applications. Participants examine product testing, certification, documentation and compliance considerations for battery-powered products and systems.

The course also explains the distinction between a certified product, a compliant installation and safe operation throughout the product’s lifecycle.

In-Person Course – Four Hours

The four-hour in-person course applies battery standards and safety principles through product examples, testing information and case studies. Participants examine situations in which standards, systems and safeguards were put to the test under real-world conditions.

The program can be adapted to support procurement, product evaluation, facility planning, inspections, operational readiness and emergency-response responsibilities.

International Training

CESAT’s instructor-led virtual battery standards training is available to organizations and participants internationally. Our training team can also deliver customized international programs, including Train-the-Trainer courses and intensive multi-day or full-week workshops.

Programs can be adapted to local regulations, applicable international standards, product markets, battery applications and organizational responsibilities.

Second Life and Battery Recycling

Second Life and Battery Recycling examines the safety considerations associated with battery reuse, repurposing, collection, transportation, storage and recycling. Participants learn why battery risks can continue after a product is removed from service and why damaged, defective or recalled lithium-ion batteries require specialized identification, handling and control.

Virtual Course – Two Hours

The two-hour virtual course introduces battery second-life applications and recycling processes. Participants examine the battery lifecycle and the safety responsibilities of organizations collecting, transporting, storing, repurposing or recycling used batteries.

The course also addresses damaged battery recognition, segregation, temporary storage, packaging, transportation and the risk of delayed fire or thermal runaway.

In-Person Course – Four Hours

The four-hour in-person course provides an applied examination of battery handling, facility practices, storage arrangements and recycling operations. Participants review practical examples of battery identification, damage assessment, segregation, packaging, transportation and emergency planning.

Where appropriate, the training can incorporate demonstrations, a facility review or discussion of the host organization’s existing battery-handling and emergency-response procedures.

International Training

CESAT’s instructor-led virtual battery recycling safety training is available to organizations and participants internationally. Our training team can also deliver customized international programs, including Train-the-Trainer courses and intensive multi-day or full-week workshops.
